Elmhurst, IL – An allegedly intoxicated driver from Bensenville was arrested Tuesday after fleeing two traffic crashes in a stolen vehicle before being located by Elmhurst police behind a local business.
According to the Elmhurst Police Department, officers responded around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a traffic crash at Illinois Route 83 and St. Charles Road. Authorities said the same vehicle was allegedly involved in a second crash shortly afterward at Illinois Route 83 and North Avenue.
Police said that after the second collision, a witness allegedly saw the driver exit a 2015 Ford 500 and run east through a nearby business parking lot.
Officers searched the area and reportedly located the suspect behind a business in the 500 block of West North Avenue. Police said the driver allegedly had a bottle of Jack Danielโs whiskey in his hand and was wearing a backpack containing electronics.
Investigators later determined the Ford 500 had allegedly been stolen from Bensenville. Police also reported locating two electronic items in the suspectโs backpack that allegedly had store security sensors attached.
Authorities said the driver provided a breath sample that allegedly indicated a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit. Following the investigation, officers took the suspect into custody.
Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Edwin O. Aponte of the 300 block of Rose Street in Bensenville.
According to police, Aponte allegedly faces charges including possession of a stolen motor vehicle, driving under the influence, theft, obstructing police, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license revoked and multiple traffic violations.
