ELKO, Nev. – A powerful storm is blanketing Northern and Central Nevada with heavy snow this evening, creating dangerous travel conditions across the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range through early Thursday morning. Snow totals could reach up to 15 inches in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Elko, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday. The system is bringing strong winds up to 50 mph on exposed ridges, with visibility reduced to near zero in blowing snow. State Route 229 through Secret Pass and areas near Lamoille Canyon are expected to be snow-covered and treacherous overnight.
Drivers are urged to avoid mountain travel if possible. Those who must be on the road should carry tire chains, food, water, warm clothing, and a flashlight in case of emergency. The Nevada Department of Transportation advises checking 511 before heading out for real-time road conditions.
The heaviest snow is expected to taper off by early Thursday, but lingering gusty winds and icy roads could continue to impact morning travel across Elko County. Further updates are expected as the storm evolves through midweek.
