Elko, NV – Travel through the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range will be extremely hazardous today as a powerful winter storm continues to dump heavy snow across Elko County. The National Weather Service warns that some areas could see between 10 and 15 inches of snow by early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Elko, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. PDT Thursday. Winds could gust up to 50 mph on exposed ridges and near the crest, creating whiteout conditions and dangerous drifts on mountain roads.

Officials warn that State Route 229 through Secret Pass, the road to Lamoille Canyon, and Harrison Pass in southern Elko County will likely be snow-covered and treacherous. Travel may be “extremely difficult or nearly impossible,” the NWS said.

Motorists are urged to avoid mountain travel if possible. Those who must drive should carry tire chains, warm clothing, extra food and water, and a flashlight in case of emergency.

For updated road conditions in Nevada, drivers can call 511 or visit the state’s official road report website.
