Elko, NV – Dangerous weather conditions are impacting Elko and surrounding northern Nevada communities Wednesday, as powerful winds and blowing dust create hazardous travel conditions and increase the risk of power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. PST Wednesday for northern Lander County, northern Eureka County, and much of Elko County. Visibility may drop to between one-quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust, with sudden reductions possible along highways and open areas.

At the same time, a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. PST for parts of northern Lander, northern Eureka, and southwest Elko counties, where west winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are producing gusts up to 50 mph. Farther north and east, including northern and southeastern Elko County and the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range, a High Wind Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m., with gusts reaching up to 60 mph.

Forecasters warn that damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines, with widespread power outages expected in some areas. Travel is expected to be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, due to both strong crosswinds and rapidly changing visibility from blowing dust.

The National Weather Service urges drivers to be prepared for near-zero visibility. If blowing dust is encountered, motorists are advised to pull off the roadway as far as possible, turn off all vehicle lights, and keep their foot off the brake pedal — following the guidance, “Pull Aside, Stay Alive.”

Residents with respiratory conditions are encouraged to remain indoors until conditions improve. Outdoor objects should be secured, and people are advised to avoid unnecessary travel through the evening hours as winds gradually subside later tonight.
