South Bend, IN – Temperatures will drop back below freezing across northern Indiana tonight, creating a renewed risk for frost, icy spots, and plant damage before sunrise Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, lows will fall between 24°F and 32°F by early Wednesday morning, with the coldest readings expected in rural and low-lying areas near South Bend, Elkhart, and Angola between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. While widespread travel issues are not expected, bridges and untreated roads could briefly become slick.
Daytime highs today will struggle into the upper 30s to mid-40s, keeping conditions well below normal. Cities along the US-31 and I-69 corridors, including Fort Wayne and Warsaw, will see similar cold conditions before temperatures rebound quickly Wednesday.
By Wednesday afternoon, highs climb into the mid-50s to mid-60s with breezy conditions. That warming trend continues into Thursday, when highs reach the mid-60s to low 70s, along with a 40% chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms.
Residents should protect sensitive plants tonight and remain cautious during the early commute. Additional rain chances develop late Wednesday night into Thursday, with more updates expected as the pattern turns more active.
