Elkhart Man Killed in East Chicago Shooting; Death Ruled Homicide

East Chicago, IN – Authorities have identified the man killed in an early Tuesday morning shooting in East Chicago as 33-year-old Joseph Ross of Elkhart, Indiana, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Investigators were dispatched around 6:34 a.m. Tuesday, November 25, 2025, to the 4700 block of Drummond Street in East Chicago, where Ross was found with a gunshot wound. The coroner’s office confirmed that he was pronounced deceased at the scene at approximately 5:10 a.m.

According to the official release, positive identification was made through fingerprints and confirmation from family members via photograph. A forensic autopsy conducted later that morning at the Lake County Forensic Center determined the cause of death as a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

The investigation remains active and is being handled by the East Chicago Police Department, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit. No further details on possible suspects or arrests have been released.
