Abilene, TX – West central Texas is under an elevated fire weather alert for Friday afternoon, with dry conditions and strong winds creating an increased risk for fire spread.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Abilene/San Angelo, relative humidity levels will drop into the teens while southwest winds increase to 15-25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The combination of dry air and strong winds will create critical fire conditions from noon until 6 p.m. Friday, particularly along and east of a line from Sweetwater to Mertzon to Sonora.

Officials warn that vegetation in the area is critically dry, making it highly susceptible to ignition and rapid fire growth. Residents are urged to take precautions, including avoiding outdoor burning, not discarding cigarette butts from vehicles, and ensuring that chains on trailers are not dragging on roadways, as sparks could ignite fires.

Drivers should also be cautious when traveling on dry grass and avoid any activities that could produce flames or sparks. The NWS advises residents to stay informed and be prepared for quickly changing conditions.
