Wilmington, IL – An electrical fire at the Super Shine Motel early Tuesday displaced eight residents and their pets.

Firefighters responded at 12:41 a.m. to the motel at 107 Bridge St., where they discovered smoke in one room. The blaze originated in the attic space above the utility area, but crews extinguished it quickly. Officials confirmed the fire was electrical.

According to the Wilmington Fire Protection District, the one-story portion of the motel lost power and was deemed uninhabitable. Emergency personnel relocated three residents and their pets to a temporary warming center on N. Main St. The Wilmington ESDA building, assisted by the Red Cross, served as a refuge until alternate lodging was arranged.

Firefighters noted that some residents were able to seek shelter independently. The displaced residents have since been moved to area hotels.

The Super Shine Motel has a history of evacuations, including one in January 2024 due to flooding along the Kankakee River. ComEd was called to assess the damage and secure the electrical systems.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure residents’ safety.
