El Paso, Texas – Drivers across the Borderland should prepare for slippery and potentially icy road conditions beginning Saturday night as a winter system brings a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain into southern New Mexico and far west Texas.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Saturday evening through late Sunday morning for much of the Tularosa Basin, Sierra County Lakes region, and the El Paso metro area, including Fort Bliss and Downtown El Paso. Snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are possible, along with ice buildup near one-tenth of an inch, especially during overnight hours.
Rain is expected to transition to snow and freezing rain after sunset, with impacts increasing late Saturday night into early Sunday. Roads across El Paso, Chaparral, Alamogordo, Truth or Consequences, and near White Sands National Park could become slick, particularly bridges and elevated surfaces. Portions of I-10, U.S. 54, and area surface streets may see reduced traction during the Sunday morning hours.
In the Northern Hudspeth Highlands and Hueco Mountains, including areas near Hueco Tanks and Loma Linda, snow totals could reach up to 3 inches with ice accumulations closer to two-tenths of an inch, creating more hazardous travel conditions.
Drivers are urged to slow down, avoid sudden braking, and allow extra travel time. Road conditions can be checked by calling 511 in both Texas and New Mexico. Wintry precipitation is expected to taper late Sunday morning, though lingering slick spots may persist beyond the advisory period. Additional updates are possible if ice accumulations increase.
