El Paso, TX – A powerful weather system is expected to bring hazardous winds and blowing dust to El Paso and surrounding parts of southern New Mexico through Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a Blowing Dust Advisory and Wind Advisory remain in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT Friday for several counties across New Mexico and far West Texas. Impacted areas include Dona Ana County, the Mesilla Valley, Otero Mesa, Tularosa Basin, and El Paso County.
Winds from the southwest are forecast to reach 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. These strong winds could reduce visibility to between one-quarter and one mile in blowing dust, making travel hazardous, especially along I-10 and other major roadways.
Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are advised to use caution. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, and those with respiratory concerns should stay indoors.
Officials warn of potential power outages and falling tree limbs due to wind gusts. In dust-prone areas, remember the safety phrase: “Pull Aside, Stay Alive.” Motorists encountering blowing dust should safely exit the roadway, turn off lights, and avoid using brakes to stay visible.
