Effingham, IL – A fast-moving Fall system will spread accumulating snow across east-central Illinois Saturday, bringing hazardous travel from daybreak through early Sunday across Effingham, Cumberland, Clark, Jasper, Crawford, Lawrence, Richland, and Clay counties.
According to the National Weather Service Lincoln office, a Winter Weather Advisory runs from 6 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday. Totals will range from 3 to 4 inches near Effingham, Greenup, and Marshall, with 1 to 3 inches farther south toward Olney, Flora, Robinson, and Lawrenceville. Snow begins shortly after sunrise and intensifies through the afternoon.
According to IDOT, roads will turn slick quickly on I-70, US-45, IL-32/33, and rural connectors where cold pavement allows snow to stick. Crews expect bridges and overpasses to freeze first. Drivers should slow down, expand following distance, and monitor gettingaroundillinois.com before starting longer trips. Officials warn that persistent light-moderate snowfall may keep roads partly snow-covered well into Saturday evening.
According to county emergency managers in Effingham and Cumberland counties, weekend events and local shopping traffic could face delays if heavier bursts arrive midafternoon. Residents are encouraged to charge phones, carry blankets and ice scrapers, and use caution on outdoor steps and driveways, which may glaze by late day.
Snow will taper overnight but untreated surfaces may remain slick into early Sunday morning.
