LaPorte County, IN – A survey team has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado struck LaPorte County on July 15. The tornado, with peak wind speeds of 100 MPH, caused significant damage along its 3.21-mile path, uprooting trees and inflicting minor to moderate damage on several homes.
According to the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the tornado formed rapidly south of Waterford around 11:32 PM CDT. The storm’s path extended eastward, where it weakened near Johnson Road. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
This tornado is the third confirmed in the area from the July 15-16 derecho event. The derecho, a widespread, long-lived wind storm, caused severe thunderstorms with wind gusts between 60 and 70 MPH. This weather event moved through eastern Iowa and into northern Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan, prompting multiple severe weather warnings.
