Rocksprings, TX – A Texas Department of Public Safety corporal is being recognized for his quick action after a vehicle pursuit in Rocksprings ended with a crash into the Llano River.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Corporal Justin Derr was involved in the October 2022 pursuit in an area known for heavy human smuggling activity. The chase concluded when the suspect’s vehicle rolled into the river, trapping several occupants inside.

Officials said Corporal Derr immediately entered the water, breaking windows and removing airbags to reach those inside. Working alongside other first responders, Derr pulled the individuals from the submerged vehicle and carried them to safety. In total, five people were rescued.

Authorities later confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was convicted on charges of smuggling of persons and aggravated assault.

DPS officials said the incident highlights the teamwork and bravery of law enforcement across the state. “Examples like this illustrate how law enforcement works together to save lives and make Texas safer,” the department said in a public statement.

Residents are encouraged to remain alert in areas where human smuggling activity is common and to report suspicious behavior to local authorities.
