Edgewood, MD — Harford County is marking 10 years since two sheriff’s deputies were killed, prompting community remembrance and blood donations.
According to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office, Senior Deputy Patrick Dailey and Deputy First Class Mark Logsdon were shot and killed in the line of duty on Feb. 10, 2016, one of the darkest days in the department’s history.
Sheriff Jeff Gahler said the deputies were responding to a call for a suspicious person when the shooting occurred, an incident that shook the county and led to widespread closures and community mourning.
In honor of the deputies’ service and sacrifice, the sheriff’s office is hosting its annual memorial blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. The drive, organized by the families of the fallen deputies, will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Post 17 on Edgewood Road.
Red Cross officials said this year’s drive comes at a critical time. Scott Marder with the American Red Cross said winter weather has reduced the national blood supply by as much as 35%, with more than 800 blood drives canceled nationwide.
Each blood donation takes less than an hour and can help save multiple lives, Marder said.
For those unable to attend the blood drive, a separate fundraiser will be held Tuesday evening at Texas Roadhouse in Fallston on Mountain Road. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Police Unity Tour, which honors fallen law enforcement officers.
Capt. Michael Schleper, commander of the sheriff’s Northern Precinct, said 12 riders will participate this year, with a fundraising goal of about $25,000. The group is currently about halfway toward that goal.
The events offer two ways for residents, commuters, and young workers in the area to give back while honoring the legacies of two deputies whose impact continues to be felt across Harford County.
