Whites City, New Mexico – A light earthquake rattled parts of southeastern New Mexico late Sunday afternoon, with a magnitude 3.1 tremor recorded about 27 kilometers northwest of Whites City at 5:10 p.m., raising brief concern for residents near Carlsbad and surrounding rural areas.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake struck at a depth of 5.0 kilometers, a relatively shallow level that can increase the chance of surface shaking despite the lower magnitude. The event has been reviewed and confirmed by seismic monitors.

Communities across Eddy County, including areas along U.S. Route 62/180 and near Carlsbad Caverns National Park, may have felt slight movement, described typically as a quick jolt or vibration. No injuries or infrastructure damage have been reported, and emergency management agencies have not issued any alerts.

Small earthquakes like this are not uncommon in this region, which has seen increased seismic activity in recent years tied to both natural shifts and industrial operations. Residents are advised to remain aware of surroundings, secure loose items, and review basic earthquake safety such as moving away from windows during shaking.

No aftershocks have been confirmed as of Sunday evening, but monitoring will continue. Additional updates could follow if seismic activity increases overnight.
