Cheyenne, Wyoming – A pocket of severe thunderstorms could develop this afternoon across eastern Niobrara County and into the Nebraska Panhandle, bringing the threat of damaging winds and hail between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, any storms that form today will be isolated but potentially strong, with wind gusts topping 60 mph and quarter-sized hail possible. The key factor will be whether these cells can overcome a layer of warm, dry air currently capping storm development.
Cities including Lusk, Harrison, and Chadron should remain alert for quick-changing skies. Lightning and brief downpours could also affect drivers along U.S. Highway 20 and secondary roads throughout the region. Gusty outflows may knock down small branches or unsecured outdoor items.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and have shelter options nearby, especially during the late afternoon and early evening. Outdoor plans and travel should be adjusted if storms begin to build.
Another update will be issued if storms initiate or conditions escalate further.
