La Crosse, Wis. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could impact western and central Wisconsin this weekend, with the highest risk for damaging winds and large hail expected Saturday night and again Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, two waves of storms are likely—first developing early Saturday morning west of the Mississippi River, followed by a stronger round late Saturday night. A Level 2 (Slight Risk) has been issued for areas including Red Wing and Minneapolis on Saturday, while cities like La Crosse, Austin, and Rochester fall under a Level 1 (Marginal Risk).

On Sunday, the threat zone shifts east, with Eau Claire, Wisconsin Dells, and River Falls now included in the Level 2 risk area. Scattered storms are expected to build by afternoon, with the potential for hail and damaging wind gusts before diminishing into the evening.

Residents with outdoor weekend plans should remain weather-aware, especially in eastern Wisconsin by Sunday. Secure loose items and have a shelter plan in place if warnings are issued.

Additional updates and watches may be issued depending on how Saturday’s storms evolve.
