Spokane, Washington – Residents across the Inland Northwest should prepare for the return of thunderstorms Thursday as scattered afternoon and evening storms develop across eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle, bringing the potential for gusty winds, dangerous lightning and new wildfire starts.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, thunderstorm chances will increase to 10% to 30% Thursday afternoon and evening across central and eastern Washington as well as the Idaho Panhandle. While storms are expected to be isolated, any thunderstorm that develops could produce brief strong wind gusts, cloud-to-ground lightning and localized hazards. Some storms may linger overnight before gradually weakening.
Communities including Spokane, Pullman, Colville, Moses Lake, Wenatchee, Coeur d’Alene, Sandpoint and surrounding areas should remain alert during the late afternoon and evening when storm development is most likely. Lightning striking dry vegetation could ignite new fires, while gusty outflow winds may create hazardous travel conditions for high-profile vehicles and rapidly spread any existing wildfires.
Anyone planning hiking, camping or other outdoor recreation should monitor weather conditions closely and head indoors or into a hard-topped vehicle if thunder is heard. Fire safety remains critical, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks in dry vegetation.
The thunderstorm threat is expected to diminish late Thursday night, although isolated activity may linger across parts of eastern Washington and north Idaho. Additional weather statements or fire weather alerts may be issued if storm coverage or wildfire concerns increase.
