Spokane, Washington – Scattered thunderstorms rolling across eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle could turn severe through Thursday, bringing gusty winds, hail, and lightning that could spark fires and cause localized flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, storms are expected to intensify Wednesday afternoon and persist into Thursday, especially across the Columbia Basin and northeastern Washington counties. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, strong enough to knock down tree limbs and trigger power outages. Hail between 0.25 and 1 inch in diameter is also possible, along with heavy downpours that may flood roads and low-lying areas.
Spokane, Colville, Kellogg, Lewiston, and Moses Lake are all within the affected area. Interstate 90 travelers should expect sudden low visibility and ponding on roads, particularly during late afternoon and evening hours.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roads, and stay weather-aware with mobile alerts activated. Lightning could also ignite new fire starts in dry areas, especially near rangelands and foothills.
Thunderstorm risk remains elevated through Thursday evening, with additional watches or warnings likely as storms evolve.
