Spokane, WA – Drivers across Eastern Washington are being urged to use caution Thursday as strong winds are expected to kick up areas of blowing dust, creating hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, gusts between 30 and 40 mph could lower visibility to as little as half a mile in some locations, particularly near recently plowed fields. The highest risk areas include Interstate 90 between George and Ritzville, and U.S. Highway 2 from Waterville to Davenport.
Meteorologists warned that blowing dust could develop Thursday afternoon, reducing visibility and making driving difficult. While the confidence level for widespread impacts is rated as moderate, localized hazards could appear quickly and without warning.
The advisory comes on top of a Red Flag Warning issued for much of Central and Eastern Washington. The region is facing critical fire weather conditions due to high winds and low humidity, which could cause new or ongoing fires to spread rapidly.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, keep headlights on in dusty areas, and avoid pulling over in travel lanes if visibility drops. Travelers should also check road updates before heading out, particularly in high-risk zones.
