Spokane, Washington – Fire crews across Eastern Washington are bracing for dangerous conditions Monday as powerful winds and low humidity spark a Red Flag Warning from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, gusts could reach up to 60 mph in the Okanogan Valley, with widespread critical fire risk across the Columbia Basin, Palouse, and Spokane areas.

The warning covers multiple zones, including the Okanogan Highlands, Methow Valley, Waterville Plateau, and Colville Reservation. Winds will shift out of the north as a cold front sweeps the region, driving sustained speeds of 20 to 40 mph and local gusts as high as 55 mph—especially along the Waterville Plateau and Okanogan Valley. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 15 percent, creating prime conditions for fast-moving wildfires.

Local emergency management urges residents in Spokane, Omak, Wenatchee, and Pullman to avoid any outdoor burning or activities that could ignite dry fuels. Travel along U.S. Highway 97 and State Route 20 may become hazardous due to blowing dust and sudden wind gusts. Residents should prepare for possible power outages, charge devices in advance, and be ready to evacuate if necessary.

These conditions are similar to previous fire seasons that saw rapid fire growth and highway closures. The Red Flag Warning remains in effect through late Monday, with further advisories possible if winds persist or new fires start.
