Richmond, Va. – Virginia heads into the holiday weekend with sunshine, dry conditions, and gusty winds—but beachgoers should stay cautious as rip current risks climb along the coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, highs today will reach the low to mid-70s across central and eastern Virginia, with winds gusting up to 30 mph by late afternoon. A Moderate Rip Current Risk is in place for all area beaches, including Virginia Beach, Sandbridge, and Corolla, where surf heights could reach around 3 feet.
Inland cities like Richmond, Petersburg, and Farmville can expect breezy but comfortable conditions. Winds may impact light outdoor setups, while cooler overnight lows will drop into the mid-40s to low 50s—prompting some to grab an extra layer for evening plans.
At the coast, swimmers are urged to stick to guarded beaches and avoid taking risks in rough surf. Officials warn that most rip current fatalities occur on unguarded beaches or after lifeguards have gone off-duty.
Conditions are expected to ease slightly by Sunday, but warnings remain in effect for today. More updates will be issued if wind conditions or beach hazards intensify.
