Richmond, Va. – Triple-digit heat and the threat of evening storms are creating dangerous conditions across eastern Virginia today, particularly along and east of I-95, where a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, heat index values are expected to reach 102–107 degrees, with the highest readings centered around Richmond, Williamsburg, and Norfolk. The advisory covers areas from Emporia to Fredericksburg and includes portions of the Northern Neck and Hampton Roads. A few strong to severe storms are also possible this afternoon and evening, primarily moving in from the west, bringing isolated damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours.
Cities like Petersburg, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach may see dangerous heat conditions during peak hours, especially between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity outdoors, and check on vulnerable individuals. Some areas could also experience localized power outages or tree damage if storms intensify late in the day.
The NWS notes that this is the first major heat event of the season for much of the region, with storm impacts resembling those of early summer squall lines.
Heat Advisories and severe weather risks remain in place through the evening. Additional alerts may be issued as storms develop.
