Richmond, Va. – A dangerous line of storms is pushing through Virginia and the Carolinas Friday evening, bringing the threat of 70 mph wind gusts and hail as large as 1 inch.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. EDT for eastern and southern Virginia, northern North Carolina, and far eastern Maryland. Thunderstorms are expected to intensify into the evening hours, particularly near cities like Roanoke, Richmond, Norfolk, and Elizabeth City.
The storms, moving eastward from south-central Virginia and northwest North Carolina, could produce isolated hail and damaging wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines. The NWS warns that some storms could become severe quickly, especially in areas ahead of the main line.
Travelers should avoid unnecessary driving, especially along I-64, I-85, and US-460, where visibility and debris may become hazardous. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and monitor NOAA weather alerts.
This is part of a broader outbreak affecting multiple states, with watches also active in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Storm conditions are expected to subside overnight, but additional alerts may be issued if cells redevelop.
