VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Strong rip currents will keep swimmers at risk through Wednesday evening as hazardous beach conditions remain in effect. Officials are urging beachgoers to avoid swimming or to stay near staffed lifeguard stands until conditions improve.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Beach Hazards Statement and High Rip Current Risk remain active for coastal Virginia and northeast North Carolina until late Wednesday. The strongest impacts will be felt along Virginia Beach’s Atlantic shoreline, including Sandbridge and stretches near the Oceanfront.

By Thursday, calmer surf and sunny skies are expected to return, creating safer conditions heading into the weekend. Temperatures will rise into the low 80s Thursday and mid-80s by Saturday, bringing a late-summer feel for early September. Inland communities across Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth will also see the warm-up, with mostly clear evenings offering comfortable nights in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Drivers along U.S. Route 60 near the Virginia Beach Oceanfront should also stay alert for heavier pedestrian and event traffic as pleasant weather draws more visitors to the shore. Locals planning outdoor events, including football games Friday night, can expect mostly clear skies and warm fall-like air.

The National Weather Service reminds residents to use caution in and near the water and to keep informed on updated advisories. Additional statements could be issued if rip current risks linger longer than expected.
