Richmond, Virginia – Inland areas of Virginia, particularly west of the Chesapeake Bay, are under an extended Flood Watch through late Monday night. Significant rainfall has already occurred across much of the region this afternoon, increasing the risk of flash flooding.

According to the US National Weather Service Wakefield VA, the Flood Watch is in effect for highlighted areas, with the greatest threat impacting the Piedmont and I-95 corridor. Highly localized areas could see 2-4 inches of rain within a 1-2 hour period, while most areas will receive less than 1 inch.

Residents in cities like Richmond, Petersburg, and Williamsburg should prepare for potential flooding in urban and low-lying areas. Some road closures are possible, especially along creeks and streams, as water levels rise. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to drive through standing water.

The confidence level for moderate confidence in localized flooding is high. Property owners in flood-prone zones should take precautions, such as moving valuable items to higher ground and ensuring storm drains are clear.

The Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday evening. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the situation develops.
