Richmond, Virginia – 29°F overnight lows are expected to freeze plants and damage outdoor plumbing through Sunday morning, creating widespread impacts across central and eastern Virginia.
Cooler air has settled into the region today, with highs struggling to reach the upper 40s to low 50s across Richmond, Williamsburg, and Norfolk. Despite dry conditions, the colder air mass will allow temperatures to drop quickly after sunset, setting up a widespread freeze overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, most of central and eastern Virginia will fall below freezing by early Sunday morning, with lows ranging from the upper 20s inland to the low to mid-30s near the coast. Areas along I-95, including Richmond and Petersburg, along with Hampton Roads communities such as Norfolk and Newport News, are all at risk.
The primary concern is damage to sensitive vegetation, including early spring crops and outdoor plants. Frost formation will be widespread, especially in rural and low-lying areas. Unprotected outdoor plumbing and irrigation systems could also be impacted.
Residents should cover or bring in plants, protect exposed pipes, and prepare for freezing conditions overnight. Early Sunday travelers should watch for isolated slick spots on bridges and elevated roadways.
Temperatures will rebound above freezing by mid-morning Sunday, with a gradual warming trend continuing into early next week. Additional updates are possible if further cold conditions develop.
