Grand Junction, Colorado – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for central and eastern Utah from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday as hot, dry, and windy conditions raise the threat of wildfires across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a strong ridge of high pressure is pushing temperatures nearly 10 degrees above average, while relative humidity drops as low as 8%. Wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph are expected through the afternoon, creating critical fire weather conditions.
Communities along the Colorado-Utah border, including Moab, Blanding, and Green River, should avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could spark flames. Dry fuels and strong winds will allow any fire starts to spread rapidly. Officials are urging residents to secure trailers to prevent dragging chains and to avoid using equipment that generates sparks.
Drivers along U.S. 191 and I-70 should be alert for sudden visibility reductions from blowing dust or smoke. Fire crews are on standby throughout the region, and no burn permits will be issued during the warning period.
Conditions are expected to improve after sunset, but additional warnings may be issued if dry and windy weather persists into the weekend.
