Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – Drivers across eastern Upper Michigan will face deteriorating road conditions late Monday as accumulating snow spreads into the region ahead of the evening commute, with slick travel expected to last into Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Monday until 10 a.m. Tuesday for Chippewa and Mackinac counties, including Western, Central, and Southeast Chippewa as well as Eastern and Western Mackinac. Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected, with the steadiest snowfall developing Monday night and continuing into early Tuesday.
Road conditions are expected to worsen quickly on US-2, M-28, and I-75, particularly in areas near Sault Ste. Marie, Pickford, Rudyard, and St. Ignace. Secondary roads and untreated surfaces may become snow-covered and slick during peak travel hours, increasing the risk of spinouts and delays during both the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes.
Michigan Department of Transportation crews are expected to treat primary routes, but drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Visibility may briefly drop during heavier bursts of snow overnight.
Snow tapers off late Tuesday morning, but slick spots may linger even after the advisory expires. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall totals trend higher than expected.
