Davis, West Virginia – Life-threatening winter cold will grip the high terrain of Eastern Tucker County from Sunday morning through early Monday, with extreme wind chills capable of causing frostbite in a short time. This is the coldest stretch so far this season for Canaan Valley and surrounding high elevations.
The most severe conditions develop early Sunday as strong northwest winds combine with plunging temperatures. Wind chills between 15 and 20 below zero are expected at times, especially across exposed ridges and open valleys. Conditions remain dangerously cold through Sunday night before slowly easing Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service office in Pittsburgh, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday for Eastern Tucker County. Communities impacted include Davis, Thomas, and Canaan Valley, where prolonged exposure could lead to frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.
Travelers along WV Route 32, U.S. 219, and mountain backroads should be prepared for brutal cold, especially if vehicles become disabled. According to emergency management officials, residents and visitors should avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, dress in multiple layers, and cover all exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face protection. Outdoor recreation plans in Canaan Valley State Park and nearby ski areas should account for rapidly dangerous exposure conditions.
This level of cold can also stress homes and utilities. Residents are urged to protect exposed pipes, ensure adequate heat overnight, and safely use supplemental heaters. Pets should be kept indoors, and livestock should have access to wind shelter and unfrozen water.
Temperatures begin a slow recovery late Monday morning, but bitter winter air remains entrenched across the high country into midweek.
