Sioux Falls, S.D. – A strong cold front will sweep across South Dakota this week, dropping temperatures into fall-like territory and raising the risk of patchy frost in rural areas by late Wednesday night. Highs that recently climbed into the 80s will dip into the 60s and low 70s through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, overnight lows will fall into the 40s for much of eastern South Dakota, with isolated readings in the upper 30s Wednesday night and again Friday night. While widespread frost is not expected, those with cold-sensitive plants outdoors should take precautions, especially in low-lying and sheltered areas.
Chamberlain and Huron will see some of the sharpest drops, with lows near 42 degrees Wednesday into Thursday morning. Sioux Falls is forecast to bottom out around 41 degrees midweek, while Brookings and Marshall could slip into the upper 30s. Daytime highs across the region will stay comfortable, ranging from 65 to 72 degrees through Friday.
Travelers should prepare for cooler mornings, and gardeners may want to cover plants or move containers indoors.
Cooler-than-normal conditions are expected to linger into early next week, with another round of chilly nights possible by Sunday.
