Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Residents across eastern South Dakota should prepare for potential flash flooding beginning Thursday night, as saturated soils and repeated rounds of rain push creeks and low-lying areas toward capacity. A Flood Watch is now in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday through Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls, rainfall rates could exceed the soil’s ability to absorb water, especially in counties including Spink, Codington, Brookings, and Beadle. Urban flooding and road ponding may be likely in cities like Watertown, Brookings, and Huron overnight.
The threat stems from multiple waves of storms tracking through the region this evening and overnight. With much of the area already soaked from earlier rainfall, the risk for rapid runoff and flash flooding is significantly higher. Poor-drainage neighborhoods and intersections will be especially vulnerable.
Drivers should avoid flooded roadways, monitor local alerts, and charge devices ahead of any power disruptions. Emergency officials advise preparing now and staying weather-aware through Friday morning.
More watches or warnings may be issued overnight as storm activity continues.
