Sioux Falls, S.D. – Strong thunderstorms are rolling across South Dakota overnight, with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for more than 30 counties, including Minnehaha, Brown, Brookings, and Lincoln. Residents may see damaging winds up to 70 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning through the early morning hours.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., the watch zone stretches across much of eastern and central South Dakota, affecting communities from Aberdeen to Sioux Falls. The storms are expected to move quickly eastward overnight, posing a risk to drivers on Interstates 29 and 90 as well as rural highways.

Power outages are possible as strong gusts and lightning strike the region. Emergency officials advise charging phones, securing outdoor items, and avoiding unnecessary travel until storms weaken after sunrise.

Cities including Watertown, Mitchell, and Yankton remain at risk for intense downpours and brief flooding in low-lying areas. The watch could be extended if storms hold together into Saturday morning.

Warnings remain in place through 6 a.m., and residents should stay alert for additional updates.
