Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Multiple rounds of heavy thunderstorms overnight are raising the risk of flash flooding across much of eastern South Dakota, where a Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in both Sioux Falls and Aberdeen, counties under alert include Brookings, Beadle, Kingsbury, Clark, Spink, and Deuel. Rainfall totals could rise quickly due to saturated ground and high rainfall rates, especially during the early-morning hours.
Urban areas such as Brookings, Watertown, and Redfield may experience flooded roads and poor drainage issues. Commuters are urged to allow extra time and avoid water-covered roadways, particularly along Highway 14 and surrounding low-lying routes.
Several creeks and rivers, including the Big Sioux River and smaller tributaries near Milbank and Clear Lake, may see sharp rises. Emergency managers recommend charging phones overnight and preparing to move to higher ground if a Flash Flood Warning is issued.
Flooding concerns will ease by late Friday morning, but more rainfall is possible this weekend. Additional advisories may be issued depending on river response and future storm development.
