Sioux Falls, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across eastern South Dakota tonight, bringing a high risk of damaging winds up to 70 mph and hail as large as 2 inches between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. Saturday. The strongest storms are expected along and east of the I-29 corridor, including Sioux Falls, where conditions could turn hazardous in a matter of minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the main storm line will develop quickly this evening, evolving into a damaging wind threat as it moves east toward southwest Minnesota. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, and meteorologists warn that the atmosphere will be highly unstable through the night.
Drivers are urged to avoid late-night travel as storms may hit suddenly with reduced visibility, downed tree limbs, and debris. Residents should secure outdoor items, move vehicles under cover, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
A second, weaker wave of storms could develop in northwest Iowa near daybreak, but forecasters expect it to exit the region before intensifying. Severe weather warnings remain in effect until 4 a.m. Saturday.
