Aspendell, California – Travel along the Eastern Sierra Slopes could become nearly impossible by Monday afternoon as a major winter storm unloads feet of snow and powerful wind through Wednesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Storm Watch takes effect late Sunday night and continues through Wednesday evening. Forecasters warn snow totals could exceed 3 feet above 8,000 feet, with 1.5 to 2.5 feet above 7,000 feet and 8 to 16 inches down to 6,000 feet. Wind gusts may reach 55 mph, creating blowing snow and visibility below a quarter mile.

Communities including Aspendell and Whitney Portal face the greatest impacts, especially along steep mountain roads and high-elevation recreation areas. The heaviest snowfall rates are expected from Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening, when rapid accumulation and strong wind could lead to road closures and stranded vehicles. Tree damage and scattered power outages are also possible under the weight of heavy snow and gusty wind.

Officials urge residents and visitors to delay all non-essential travel. Those who must head out should carry chains, extra food, water and cold-weather gear.

Warnings may replace the current watch as confidence increases. Hazardous conditions are expected to persist into Wednesday evening.
