Bishop, CA – A powerful early-season winter storm is expected to blanket the Eastern Sierra Slopes with heavy snow beginning Monday evening, prompting a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service in Las Vegas.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin around 5 p.m. Monday, October 13, and continue through 5 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, bringing 8 to 16 inches between 7,000 and 9,000 feet and up to 2 feet above 9,000 feet. Winds may gust as high as 40 mph, creating whiteout conditions in higher elevations.

Travelers on Highway 168 west of Bishop should expect icy and snow-packed roads, with possible closures or long delays. The storm is also expected to create extreme hazards around Whitney Portal, where deteriorating weather could endanger hikers and campers unprepared for the winter conditions.

The weather service urges residents and visitors to delay travel if possible and to carry a winter storm kit, including tire chains, blankets, food, and water. Those venturing into the mountains should monitor official updates and prepare for rapid changes in weather and visibility.
