Reno, NV – Residents across Northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra should prepare for unsettled weather today as showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, storms are likely to occur between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2025, impacting the Western Nevada Basin & Range and Eastern Sierra. Meteorologists warn the storms could bring strong winds, frequent lightning, small hail, and heavy rainfall, which may lead to localized flooding in some areas.

The weather service emphasized that even isolated storms could produce sudden hazards. “Please be weather aware today,” the agency said in a statement, reminding residents to monitor local updates and avoid flooded roadways.

The timing of the storms is expected to coincide with afternoon travel, increasing risks for drivers along highways and rural roads. Outdoor plans, including hiking, boating, or sports activities, may also be disrupted by lightning and heavy downpours.

Authorities advise residents to secure loose outdoor items, avoid open areas during lightning, and check forecasts before traveling. Those in flood-prone regions should be prepared for rapid water accumulation.

The weather pattern is part of a broader system moving across the Sierra Nevada, bringing late-season instability to the region.
