Mammoth Lakes, California – Backcountry conditions across the Eastern Sierra are rapidly deteriorating Saturday as heavy snow and powerful winds combine to create a dangerous avalanche setup from Mono County south into Inyo County.

According to the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center, a Backcountry Avalanche Watch is in effect for the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada between Virginia Lakes and Bishop Creek. Avalanche danger is expected to rise to HIGH through Saturday, with very dangerous conditions continuing into Sunday morning as the storm intensifies.

Widespread unstable snow is expected to develop as strong to extreme winds transport new snowfall onto leeward slopes, forming sensitive slabs that could fail naturally or with a single skier or rider. Avalanche experts warn slides may run long distances, reaching valley floors, flat terrain, and even mature forested areas, significantly increasing the risk for anyone traveling in the backcountry.

This alert applies only to unmanaged backcountry terrain. Ski resorts and highways are not included due to ongoing avalanche mitigation efforts. Emergency officials strongly discourage travel in avalanche-prone terrain and urge recreationists to avoid steep slopes and runout zones.

Dangerous conditions are expected to persist into Sunday, and additional advisories or warnings may be issued as snowfall continues. Backcountry users should closely monitor updates from the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center before making any travel decisions.
