Aspendell, California – Travel across the Eastern Sierra could deteriorate quickly before sunrise Tuesday as accumulating snow and gusty winds move into high-elevation terrain, creating slick roads and sharply reduced visibility for mountain communities and travelers heading into the Sierra.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. Tuesday through 4 p.m. Wednesday for the Eastern Sierra Slopes above 8,000 feet. Snow totals of 2 to 7 inches are expected between 8,000 and 9,500 feet, with higher amounts likely above 9,500 feet. Wind gusts will contribute to blowing snow and sudden whiteout conditions in exposed areas.
Impacts will be most noticeable along mountain routes serving Aspendell, Whitney Portal, and surrounding high-elevation access roads, where snow-covered pavement and drifting could slow travel and increase the risk of slide-offs. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, especially in areas already weakened by winter conditions.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips into higher elevations during the advisory window. Caltrans reports road conditions can change rapidly; motorists can call 1-800-427-7623 for the latest updates. Additional advisories may be issued if snowfall or winds intensify through Wednesday.
