Bishop, CA – A powerful early-season winter storm is set to slam the Eastern Sierra Slopes beginning Monday evening, bringing dangerous travel conditions and heavy mountain snow through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 5 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, impacting areas including Whitney Portal and Aspendell. Forecasters expect 8 to 16 inches of snow between 7,000 and 9,000 feet, with up to 2 feet possible above 9,000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph, creating whiteout conditions at times.
Officials warn that Highway 168 west of Bishop may become icy and snow-packed, posing a serious risk to motorists. Hikers and campers near Whitney Portal are advised to take precautions or delay travel, as conditions could deteriorate rapidly.
“Travel may become extremely difficult, especially over higher passes,” forecasters said. “Bridges and overpasses will likely become slick and hazardous.”
Residents are urged to prepare winter storm kits including chains, blankets, flashlights, and water, and to avoid nonessential travel until the system passes early Wednesday.
