Allentown, Pennsylvania – The first winter system of the season will sweep into eastern Pennsylvania and northwest New Jersey before dawn Tuesday, delivering several hours of snow and sleet that could severely slow the morning commute from Reading to Morristown.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Winter Weather Advisories take effect at 4 a.m. Tuesday for Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Upper Bucks, and nearby New Jersey counties including Warren, Hunterdon, and Morris. Snow totals will range from 2 to 5 inches in higher elevations, with 1 to 3 inches elsewhere. Short bursts approaching an inch per hour could develop around sunrise.

Roads along I-78, U.S. 22, and Route 31 may become snow-covered quickly in places like Easton, Bethlehem, Flemington, and Morristown. Mixed precipitation is likely south and west of the Lehigh Valley, with sleet pushing into western Montgomery and Chester counties and a change to rain by late morning.

Transportation officials urge drivers to allow extra time, reduce speed, and use caution on bridges and overpasses, which will glaze first. Side streets and untreated hills will also be dangerous during the early commute.

Snow will transition to rain for many areas by midday, but slick spots could linger into early afternoon. Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through late Tuesday morning and early afternoon.
