PHILADELPHIA – Late September will feel more like July across much of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey Monday, with highs soaring into the mid-80s in Philadelphia, Reading, and Trenton before a cold front shifts conditions back to normal by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Monday will be dry and unseasonably warm, but a series of weather systems beginning Tuesday will bring unsettled conditions and the risk for showers across the region. Meanwhile, swells from distant Hurricane Gabrielle are creating dangerous conditions along the coast, with a high risk of rip currents at the Jersey Shore and Delaware Beaches through Tuesday.

Atlantic City and Toms River will see highs near 80 Monday before slipping back to the mid-70s by Thursday. In Delaware, Georgetown and Dover will follow a similar pattern, topping out in the mid-80s Monday before cooler, cloudier conditions return. Farther north, Mount Pocono will dip from the upper 70s Monday to the mid-60s by Thursday, signaling the cooler air behind the front.

Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, as lifeguards warn even strong swimmers can be swept away by rip currents.

Unsettled weather is expected to persist through the rest of the week, with additional advisories possible.
