Philadelphia, Pa. – Sunshine and a cool northeast breeze made for a pleasant Monday across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, but coastal residents should brace for a shift in conditions by Tuesday. Dangerous rip currents are expected to develop at the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches, creating life-threatening swimming risks through at least Tuesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, clouds will increase Tuesday with highs in the mid-70s. Breezy northeast winds will strengthen at the coast, and scattered showers could develop late in the day near the shoreline. While inland areas remain mostly dry, the combination of high surf and rip current activity will make ocean conditions hazardous for swimmers.
Beach patrols in towns such as Ocean City, N.J., and Rehoboth Beach, Del., are urging visitors to stay out of the water or swim only near lifeguards. Officials also remind residents to secure outdoor items ahead of the stronger winds expected Tuesday.
Conditions ease slightly by Wednesday, though showers may linger near the coast. The rip current threat is expected to gradually diminish after midweek.
