Baker City, Oregon-Thunderstorms are rapidly intensifying across east-central Oregon Monday afternoon, bringing a risk of damaging wind gusts, hail, and heavy downpours to Baker City and nearby areas.

According to the US National Weather Service Boise, storms began strengthening after 2 p.m. MDT, with hazards including gusts up to 40 mph, pockets of hail, and moderate to heavy rain. Residents from Baker City to Ontario should prepare for quickly changing weather, including reduced visibility and slick road conditions on Interstate 84.

In Baker County, emergency managers advise drivers to slow down and watch for water on roadways, as isolated flooding is possible during heavier bursts of rain. Power outages could occur if strong winds bring down branches or power lines. If you’re outside, seek shelter indoors immediately when thunder roars, and avoid open fields or hilltops during lightning.

Travelers along I-84, especially between La Grande, Baker City, and Ontario, should expect sudden slowdowns and be alert for standing water. This line of storms may impact evening commutes and local outdoor events.

Thunderstorm activity is expected to persist through early evening, with additional warnings possible. Residents should stay tuned for updates and be prepared to act if severe weather alerts are issued.
