PENDLETON, Ore. – Bitter cold grips eastern Oregon as a Fall Freeze Warning remains in effect through 9 a.m. Tuesday, threatening crops, gardens, and unprotected plumbing across the Blue Mountain foothills. Temperatures could dip to 28°F, ending the fall growing season and signaling the region’s first major cold snap of October.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, the warning covers Pendleton, Pilot Rock, Heppner, Fossil, Condon, and surrounding foothill towns. Drivers along I-84 and local highways should watch for icy patches during the morning commute, especially in shaded rural areas. Residents are urged to cover tender plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and bring pets indoors before the coldest hours.

By Tuesday afternoon, sunshine returns and temperatures rise into the mid-50s, easing the chill. Warmer, drier conditions are expected by midweek, setting up a pleasant stretch for outdoor work and late-fall leaf viewing. The weather shift could offer a brief break before another cool front approaches late weekend.

While the Columbus Day chill will be short-lived, agricultural experts warn the cold could still damage late-harvest crops and delicate ornamentals. Utility crews advise homeowners to wrap exposed pipes and check furnace filters ahead of the season’s first extended cold run.

By Wednesday, highs near 60°F should make for comfortable afternoons and crisp fall mornings — perfect for pumpkin patch visits and scenic drives along U.S. 395.
