Pendleton, Oregon – Strong winds and widespread rain are expected to sweep across eastern Oregon this weekend, bringing gusts over 45 mph and soaking showers through Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, an upper-level trough will drive intermittent showers and isolated thunderstorms Saturday, particularly across the eastern mountains. The heaviest rain is forecast between Saturday evening and late Sunday, with up to half an inch possible in cities like La Grande, Heppner, and John Day. Bend and Redmond may see lighter totals under 0.25 inches.

Winds will intensify Saturday night into Sunday, with gusts topping 30 mph across much of the region. Areas in the Cascade Gaps—including the Columbia River Gorge and Kittitas Valley—could experience gusts exceeding 40 to 45 mph. A Wind Advisory is in effect Sunday for the Kittitas Valley.

Travelers along I-84 and U.S. 97 should use caution, especially high-profile vehicles. Power outages and tree damage are possible in wind-prone zones. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and limit unnecessary travel during peak gust periods.

Rain and wind will taper off by late Sunday, with calmer, drier weather expected to return for the start of the workweek.
