Tulsa, Oklahoma – A dangerous winter storm is poised to hit eastern Oklahoma starting midday Friday, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain that could paralyze roads and disrupt power through Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, areas north of Interstate 40—including Tulsa, Bartlesville, and Claremore—could receive between 6 and 12 inches of snow, with blowing and drifting snow likely. South of I-40, including McAlester, Muskogee, and Antlers, sleet and freezing rain are expected to dominate, with totals of 4 to 8 inches and ice accumulations of up to a quarter inch near the Red River.

Travel is discouraged beginning Friday afternoon, as road conditions will rapidly deteriorate. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation warns that highways, especially U.S. 69 and I-40 corridors, may become nearly impassable by Friday night.

Localized power outages are a concern in southeast counties like Le Flore and Choctaw, where ice may weigh down trees and utility lines. Sub-freezing temperatures will persist through early next week, worsening conditions and delaying cleanup efforts.

Residents should prepare now—gather supplies, limit travel, and check okRoads.org for updated traffic info. Warming centers should be considered for those in areas vulnerable to extended outages or prolonged cold.
