Tulsa, Oklahoma – Several rivers across eastern Oklahoma are forecast to reach flood stage by Tuesday morning, with the Illinois and Poteau rivers presenting the most significant threats for moderate flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, recent heavy rainfall combined with additional storms through Tuesday is pushing rivers like the Illinois River near Tahlequah and the Poteau River near Panama toward dangerous levels. The Poteau River is expected to crest at 33.9 feet by 7 a.m. Tuesday, reaching moderate flood stage. The Illinois River near Tahlequah is also forecast to hit moderate flood stage at 15.5 feet by 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Other locations, including Bird Creek near Owasso and the Arkansas River at Ozark L/D Tailwater, are currently in “Action” stage, with minor flooding possible by Monday night. Roads and low-lying areas near these waterways may become impassable as waters rise.
Residents in affected counties—including Le Flore, Cherokee, and Tulsa—should monitor updates, avoid low-water crossings, and prepare for potential road closures. Charging phones, securing belongings, and avoiding unnecessary travel is strongly advised.
Warnings remain in effect through at least Tuesday morning, with more advisories likely if rainfall continues beyond the current 24-hour forecast window.
