Tulsa, Oklahoma – An Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for eastern Oklahoma as dangerously cold temperatures are expected to settle in late Friday and persist through Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, the watch covers much of eastern Oklahoma and portions of northwest Arkansas. Forecasters warn that dangerously cold wind chills could range from 5 below zero to as cold as 15 below zero during the period, creating a significant risk for frostbite with prolonged exposure.
The cold air is expected to arrive Friday night and remain in place through the weekend into early Monday. Officials say the extended duration of the cold increases the potential for impacts beyond health concerns, including frozen pipes and challenges for outdoor animals.
The National Weather Service urges residents to consider rescheduling outdoor plans, especially activities that require prolonged time outside. Officials recommend wrapping or draining exposed water pipes to prevent freezing and ensuring outdoor pets and livestock have adequate shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
Frostbite can occur in a short period of time when wind chills drop below zero. Symptoms may include numbness, pale or waxy skin, and loss of sensation. Hypothermia is also a concern during extended exposure to extreme cold.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared for additional cold-related advisories or warnings as confidence increases. Travelers, outdoor workers, and families with inadequate heating may be especially vulnerable during the coldest periods.
The National Weather Service advises staying informed through weather.gov/tulsa and taking cold-weather precautions seriously as temperatures drop sharply.
